President Obama highlights the role of community solutions in resolving society's challenges

The President highlighted the work of innovative non-profits from across the country today at the White House. The event brought together lawmakers, non-profits, foundations, education leaders and leaders from the private sector. The diverse audience heard from the Harlem Children’s Zone, HopeLab, Bonnie CLAC and Genesys Works, who shared their stories about how their programs are improving their communities. These programs, and those like them, have demonstrated results in their neighborhoods and represent exciting opportunities for community solutions nationwide.

The National Council of Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) & The Office for the Third Sector (OTS) have launched Funding Central www.fundingcentral.org.uk the new free website for comprehensive information about national, local and regional government funding, national, local or regional charitable funding, and EU funding.

Funding Central for the whole voluntary and community sector, including social enterprise, will have relevant and up to date information on all funding opportunities aimed at helping voluntary and community organisations easily identify relevant funding streams at the touch of a button.

Angela Smith MP has been appointed as the new Minister for the Third Sector. Angela became a government whip in 2001 before becoming Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in 2002. She subsequently moved to Communities and Local Government before becoming parliamentary private secretary to the Prime Minister. The former Minster for the Third Sector, Kevin Brennan, has moved to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Marking the 10th anniversary of the ground-breaking publication ’All Our Futures: Creativity, Culture and Education’, a new report is being launched confirming that Creative Partnerships, the government’s flagship creative learning programme which resulted from All Our Futures, is changing the lives of young people and having a real impact on their aspirations, achievements, skills and life chances. The “Creative Partnerships: Changing Young Lives” report, published by new organisation Creativity, Culture and Education (CCE), which manages Creative Partnerships at a national level, shows how involvement in the programme improves GCSE results by 2.5 grades, lowers truancy levels, helps engage families in education and has a positive impact on the economy.
