Four super strykers are coming to Wigan to give the council a cutting edge in the battle against anti-social behaviour and fly-tipping.

Stryker's IRIS (Intelligent Remote Information System) is a digital CCTV system designed for rapid deployment and surveillance across the borough. Wigan Council has purchased four of the 'new generation' cameras, which will relay high-quality, real-time images to monitoring staff - even in heavily built-up areas where there is no clear line-of-sight to the receiving location.

Councillor Keith Cunliffe, Cabinet Member for Community Protection says:

"We're investing £75 000 in the new cameras, but we expect a serious return on our investment in terms of identifying the criminals, persistent trouble-makers and fly-tippers who blight our borough."

The full package of equipment includes:

  • Stryker IRIS colour pan-tilt-zoom mobile camera units (four) with wireless transmission;
  • DVR (digital video recorder) pod - a 'snap-on' device that provides digital video recording of images at the camera location. Images recorded on the camera can be viewed remotely and downloaded for evidential purposes without the need to decommission the camera unit for any period.
  • Four remote control monitoring units with receiving equipment, camera control keyboard, pan-tilt-zoom joystick and colour LCD viewer. These can be deployed at any location within the wireless range, such as within a vehicle.

The new signings will be unveiled tomorrow (14th March, 11am) at Wigan Council's Community Protection department HQ at Westwood Park, Wigan.
