New themes for rounds nine and ten

Efficiency and transformation of customer services are among themes being considered for a high profile best practice scheme for local authorities.

The Improvement and Development Agency, which works to promote innovation among councils, this week launched a consultation document setting out possible themes for the ninth and tenth rounds of its flagship Beacon Councils initiative.

Among its proposals the IDeA said it is considering efficiency – how councils save costs so as to release more resources to frontline services – and transforming customer services.

Other proposals include community leadership through local strategic partnerships and effective community involvement

Once the categories are decided, local authorities will be able to put themselves forward for round nine by spring 2007.

Those that successfully demonstrate innovation or best practice in the relevant categories will be awarded beacon status for the next year.

Beacon councils are expected then to share information and knowledge with other local authorities looking to improve certain areas of service delivery.
