Two vital schemes to regenerate towns in Dorset and Somerset through £20m of transport investment were given the go-ahead today by Transport Minister Sadiq Khan.
The Department for Transport will invest more than £14m to build a new bridge over the Back Water Channel - improving links between Poole and Hamworthy. New link roads will also be provided, unlocking a development site near Poole town centre.
DfT is also investing up to £5.5m towards improving road access to Taunton town centre and regeneration areas, supporting the growth of the town.
Jim Knight, Regional Minister for the South West, said:
"Government investment in these transport links is very good news for Poole and Taunton. This is a welcome injection of Government money to relieve traffic pressure on Taunton town centre and unlock brownfield sites.
"For people living in Poole, particular in Hamworthy, the second harbour crossing will help make it easier for people to get around. Both these schemes will help boost economic growth and attract further investment into each area."
Both schemes, which are due to start this month, will also improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists and encourage improved public transport.
