Angela Smith MP, Minister of State for the Third Sector is to go head to head with MPs Nick Hurd and Jenny Willott, her counterparts from the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats respectively in a public debate over the future of social enterprise.

Organised by Social Enterprise London, the event will take place at Coin Street Community Builders on March 3. With the current debate over ‘John-Lewis’ style and ‘co-operative’ public services, social enterprise represents a key battleground for the forthcoming election: the evening gives all three parties a crucial opportunity to outline their thinking on these issues.

Attendees, including some of the most successful and high profile social enterprise leaders in London, will also be able to put their questions directly to the candidates.

Chaired by SEL Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton, the panel will also include June O’Sullivan, Chief Executive of leading social enterprise the London Early Years Foundation, who will present on what the social enterprise movement would like to see government do following the election.

Allison Ogden-Newton, Social Enterprise London CEO said:

“We are delighted to host what I think will be the debate for the sector as we head towards the elections. In direct competition with each other the three major parties will tell us why they should get the social enterprise vote and given the sector represents over 800 000 people in the UK, that’s quite a vote. I’m delighted to welcome all three candidates to what will undoubtedly be a riveting exchange. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Nick Hurd MP said:

“We need our social entrepreneurs as never before. So I welcome a debate on how we can support them better.”

June O’Sullivan said:

This week, with the debate over ‘co-operative’ and ‘John Lewis style’ public services, we have seen that social enterprise is a key political battleground. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to put the case for social enterprise and look forward to taking part in what I’m sure will be a powerful debate.”

Angela Smith MP, Minister for the Third Sector said:

“Across the country social enterprises are benefitting the economy, the environment and society.  They are successful businesses that give so much added value to the community and the time is right to see this sector grow.  I'm looking forward to the debate and for the opportunity to not only support and encourage the sector but to support and encourage new social enterprises.”

Jenny Willott MP said:

“I’m really looking forward to this event.  It’s great to have the opportunity to discuss the important issues relating to the Third Sector in the run-up to the election.”
