Surrey's local authorities training officers, including Tandridge District Council, Surrey County Council and Surrey e-Partnership have recently won an award for the best e-learning production on a low budget in the first ever national e-learning awards.
A CD-rom, taking the learner’s perspective, includes tutorials and quizzes in a serious yet entertaining style, to make learning easy. Delivering this on CD allows new staff to learn at their own pace or when convenient. The e-Learning Network (ELN), the independent professional association for e-learning users and developers, selected the finalists.
Of the team’s entry the judges said "The submission and presentation of this award succeeded in illustrating how a successful e-learning project can be achieved on a very small budget. The winners have enabled training to be delivered to larger numbers in more areas and at lower cost than would have been possible with any other medium. The packaging of the product deserves special recognition as does the programme itself which is functional, but also interesting and fun to do."
The district and borough councils using the new e-learning induction CD praise its effectiveness with new staff. Head of Training & Personnel, Seanne Giddy, said: “Tandridge’s staff now have essential induction training using up to date technology, while saving resources and promoting a cohesive image of Surrey’s local authorities as employers.”
Tony Zendle, of Surrey County Council who designed the product, said: "By sharing local knowledge, technical skills and past experience we have worked in partnership and developed an excellent solution to our own needs."

This Surrey wide initiative is part of an ongoing e-learning strategy, aimed at developing e-services for internal use, but also for businesses and citizens of Surrey.

Surrey Training Officers Group meet regularly to work in partnership to share best practice, explore initiatives of mutual interest which each may not have considered individually. Surrey e-partnership brings together districts, boroughs, county council and other key public sector organisations, to work towards common goals. Its vision is that the citizen should have seamless access to services and information without prior knowledge by the citizen as to which organisation provides that service or information. Sharing process systems and costs and making use of best practice to develop electronic services have designed much of this with both internal and external customers in mind.
