The Welsh Assembly Government plans to use European funding to improve high-speed broadband coverage for businesses and communities following an agreement with the European Commission, the Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones has announced.

The changes mean that in addition to supporting Information and Communication Technology (ICT) activities such as digital inclusion, European funds can now be used to help improve broadband access for those living in broadband ‘not spots’ in rural and isolated parts of Wales.

The changes coincide with new European Commission guidance which makes it easier for organisations to access EU funds of up to €50,000. Together the changes could signal a boost for businesses and communities who are currently unable to benefit from broadband services.

Mr Jones, who is also the Minister for the Economy and Transport, said:

Over the coming weeks I will be looking carefully at the options available to maximise the impact of these changes so that communities and businesses can start benefiting without delay.

In the 21st Century, it is vital that people in all parts of Wales gain access to a high-speed internet service, and it is essential that businesses are fully equipped with the right ICT infrastructure to compete successfully in a global market.

ICT plays a major part in helping us to meet our goals, building a strong and sustainable Welsh economy and providing opportunities for all.
