A new resource is being launched today for mature students, bringing together for the first time the offerings of every University and Higher Education Institute in England for adult first-time entrants (AFTEs).
Being launched by Higher Education Minister, David Lammy, http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/maturestudents has been created by the Department of Innovation Universities & Skills in association with Studentroom.com. It includes an interactive map, so potential students can see at-a-glance what the offerings are in a particular area, video case studies of current and past mature students and forum and discussion areas to share experiences and thoughts.
Higher Education Minister, David Lammy, said: "It's always been important to have the right information, advice and guidance when making big decisions about our lives, but ensuring that adults can make informed choices about their next career move or further study is even more important in these challenging economic times.
"That's why we've launched this new website dedicated to mature students, which is full of helpful tips for those people looking to re-train, get a new job or take on a new challenge."
A recent poll from DIUS revealed that 74 per cent* of mature students admitted to regretting not going into Higher Education straight from school. They chose to go back to Higher Education because they believed that they had missed out on life opportunities (17 per cent) or ended up in jobs they didn't enjoy (16 per cent). A third (31 per cent) felt that Higher Education was vital for the pursuit of a new career while 28 per cent wanted Higher Education qualifications to further an existing career.
This tool for mature students aims to help potential mature students by providing them with all the information they need in one place, to make a more informed choice, as well as providing details of the application process once their decision is made and information relating to the benefits of Higher Education for mature students.
Denise Taylor an occupational psychologist and life coach said : Going into higher education at a later stage in life has become extremely popular however some still struggle to make the jump. Due to the current downturn, many people are taking time to reassessing their future career paths and how having the right education will enhance their chances of meeting their goals. As a result, I tend to find mature students are often much clearer on why they want to study, and can get focused on their future career goals right away.
"The thought of becoming a mature student can be scary for some but it needn't be. It can be a very positive experience and will show future employers that those returning to education after working full time are willing to step outside their comfort zone. This new joint initiative from the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills and The Student Room will provide potential mature students with the means to find out more about their options, discuss their hopes and fears with others via the forum and gain practical reassurance on their future plans from a number of video case studies.
"Higher Education is the key to a strong career path and should be a consideration no matter what life stage an individual is at."
