Mencap has won a national charity award for its new brand. The UK’s leading learning disability charity, celebrated winning the Brand Development category at the Third Sector Excellence Awards (Tuesday 18 November) against tough competition, including Leonard Cheshire and Alzheimer's Society. The charity rebranded in April 2008 to reinforce its values about putting people with a learning disability in the centre of everything it does.
Mencap research showed that a lot had changed in the sixty years since the charity started. Changes in attitudes and in legislation meant that people with a learning disability, their families and carers have different needs now.
The change of strapline, from ‘Understanding learning disability’, to ‘The voice of learning disability’, better demonstrates Mencap’s commitment supporting people with a learning disability to have their own voice.
Neville Short, corporate director, Mencap, comments: “The creative team at Mencap continue to work extremely hard at managing and developing our fantastic new brand. We've had great support from all parts of the organisation and it is wonderful to have external recognition for this.”
The Third Sector Excellence Awards, now in their fourth year, recognise and celebrate the work of the voluntary sector.
