The national parliaments of the 27 Member States of the European Union and the European Parliament are meeting in Strasbourg for a new meeting on energy and sustainable development.
Traditionally the parliament of the country holding the presidency of the Council of the European Union organises one or more interparliamentary meetings with the European Parliament during its term, in order to have MEPs and members of the national parliaments of the 27 Member States work together on a given topic.
The European Parliament and the two chambers of the French parliament are, therefore, organising a second interparliamentary meeting on the subject of energy and sustainable development. The meeting, which will take place on 20 and 21 November in Strasbourg, will be co-chaired by Hans-Gert Pöttering, the President of the European Parliament, Gérard Larcher, the President of the French Senate, and Bernard Accoyer, the President of the French National Assembly.
The MEPs and the members of the national parliaments are invited to work together on three subjects, namely:
- energy and energy security in Europe;
- innovation with regard to energy and sustainable development;
- European energy policy, climate change, and international negotiations.
The Council of the European Union and the European Commission will be represented at the opening and closing addresses of the meeting. Jean-Louis Borloo, the French minister for ecology and sustainable development, or Nathalie Kosciusco-Morizet, the French minister of state for ecology, will give an opening address. The French prime minister, François Fillon, will give a closing speech on behalf of the Council.
