A Welsh Assembly Government spokesperson said: The Assembly Government is committed to doing all within the powers available to us to support the attainment of the UK Government's targets of halving child poverty by 2010, and eradicating child poverty by 2020.

There are a range of policies and programmes and new initiatives across the Assembly Government aimed at tackling child poverty including employment support programmes, childcare initiatives, education and health programmes, Communities First interventions and income maximisation.

Significant funding is being made available through a wide range of our policies and initiatives that contribute towards tackling child poverty including £89 million over 3 years for the Flying Start programme; £43.6 million is being invested in the Want2Work project to help people into employment; £70 million on Genesis Cymru Wales 2 to help people overcome a range of barriers that prevent them from entering the workforce or training, £160 million over the next 3 years for the Cymorth programme; £3 million being made available to increase the take-up of council tax benefit and housing benefit and an extra £500,000 has been made available over 2 years to raise awareness of the benefits available to parents and carers of children with disabilities.

The Assembly Government remains committed to monitoring our progress against the challenging child poverty targets that we have set ourselves. The first Children and Young People Well Being Monitor for Wales to be published on 20 November will include an update of the targets which span a range of policy areas.
