Jobcentre Plus (JCP) is ready to support anyone who needs help in the current economic climate, with a tailored programme to get people back into work, said James Purnell, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions.

This support can include everything from simple job searches to help with CV writing and interview techniques, and even support for homeowners struggling with mortgage bills.

Speaking at a conference of Jobcentre Plus staff James Purnell said:

"People want to know how they will cope if the worst happens and they lose their job. They want to know: How they will pay next month's bills? How to find another job? Whether they can get the training they need?"

"Jobcentre Plus is there to give the advice people need about what to do next. Help is available for job search, CV writing, childcare and interview techniques. We also have training courses available, and cover expenses for travel and even smart clothes for interviews. And for homeowners financial support to pay the mortgage."

"We will do everything in our power to get people into work, whatever the economic conditions."

Changes to the support package offered mean the government is well-placed and geared up to help people get back into work as soon as possible.

The package of support includes:

* When someone claims, their personal advisor will work with them to set a personalised plan with achievable goals aimed at getting them quickly back into work;

* People are seen every two weeks to ensure they have been looking for work and can get more help if needed;

* An offer of skills and training so that people are equipped to adapt to a changing job market;

* Practical advice on finding a job, CV writing, interview techniques, advice on childcare options as well as expenses for travel and even smart clothes to interviews;

* For people worried about their homes the safety net for mortgage holders who lose their job has been extended to the value of the average house, £175,000, and brought forward from 39 weeks to 13;

* The rapid response facility is being enhanced so that if companies make workers redundant we have the most up to date information and are immediately able to target help where most it is needed at the time it can have the highest impact.
