Following the news that the former chairman of the Local Government Association Lord Sandy Bruce-Lockhart has died following a long battle against cancer, Chairman of London Councils Councillor Merrick Cockell said:
“Local government has lost one of its foremost advocates with the sad death of Lord Bruce-Lockhart today.
“Sandy Bruce-Lockhart epitomised the very best of what a politician should be: courteous, good-humoured and passionate for doing what’s right.
“As Leader of Kent County Council he gained a reputation for delivery, for pioneering policy innovations and was part of that vanguard of civic leaders contributing to the revival of local government fortunes.
“When Sandy became the first Conservative Chairman of the Local Government Association, he worked tirelessly to promote local government, winning plaudits from across the political spectrum.
“Sandy will be much missed by his friends and family. Recognised with a peerage in 2006 for his enormous contributions to renewing the role of local government, Lord Bruce-Lockhart leaves a rich and lasting legacy to our country's town halls and communities. Local government could not have had a better leader than Sandy.”
