Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has today appointed 12 members of the London Assembly to the membership of the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA).

The new members are Kit Malthouse, Steve O'Connell, Dick Tracey, Victoria Borwick, James Cleverley, Navin Shah and Caroline Pidgeon.

Richard Barnes, Len Duvall, Jennette Arnold, Dee Doocey, and Jenny Jones have been reappointed as Greater London Authority members for a second term.

They take up post from today (Monday 12 May 2008) until 30 September 2008.
Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said:
'I am pleased to welcome new members onto the Authority, and welcome back members who have already served with commitment and dedication.  These appointments are a reflection of my pledge to tackle crime, particularly the wave of senseless and violent killings amongst young people in our city.  The appointments follow my recent announcement of Kit Malthouse as Deputy Mayor for Policing and Ray Lewis as Deputy Mayor for Young People.  Both Kit and Ray make up my strong team of advisers who will help me deliver my agenda of change for London.

'I have no doubt whatsoever that like myself, Kit, Ray and the new members will work tirelessly with all communities to put a stop to the violent crime and anti-social behaviour that is devastating so many lives and families across London.'

Len Duvall, Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority, said:
'Overseeing the policing of London is an immensely important statutory role for the Metropolitan Police Authority and its 23 members, and I am pleased to welcome new members onto the Authority, and welcome back colleagues who have already served with distinction and incredible commitment. We have worked with the Mayor of London, the Commissioner and others to achieve a great deal over the past few years - not least the biggest increase in police numbers in the history of the Met, and the rollout of police and PCSO teams across every ward in London.

'But there is still much to do, as has been clearly demonstrated over the weekend with the senseless murder of yet another teenager. This is clearly unacceptable, and we will work with the new Mayor, Commissioner and many others to bring about even greater improvements in order to make our streets safer.'
