HOUSEHOLDERS over 70, or those on certain benefits, are being encouraged to take advantage of a new Council scheme to provide free cavity wall and loft insulation.
In addition to providing advice on reducing heating bills, the 'Save'n Warm' initiative - operated through the South Yorkshire Energy Efficiency Advice Centre (SYEEAC) - also aims to improve the environment and air quality through carbon reduction.
Councillor Ken Wyatt, Cabinet member for Sustainability and Innovation said: "The Save 'n' Warm scheme provides discounted rates for a range of insulation measures. All householders over 70 qualify for the grants, regardless of whether they are owner-occupiers, private rented tenants or housing association tenants.
"All work is undertaken by Council-approved installers so I would encourage anyone who think that they may be eligible to call free on 0800 0281067."
Councillor Wyatt' s advice follows a spate of 'cold calling' incidents involving insulation companies from outside the area. Some of whose tactics have left some residents confused as to what they are entitled to under the scheme.
Wentworth MP, John Healey commented: "Many people who've contacted me with concerns about companies cold calling in the area have been worried about their friends or neighbours getting ripped off by unscrupulous traders. It's good that people are vigilant and I would encourage anyone with concerns to get in touch with Rotherham Council's Energy Team to check them out to be sure they are dealing with a reputable company.
"With rising fuel prices this extra support for pensioners is as important as ever, and will help improve home energy efficiency and work towards our goal of eradicating fuel poverty. I'm keen to see everyone in Rotherham who is eligible, benefit from this extra support."
Those on the following benefits may also be eligible for assistance:
Income Support; Council Tax Benefit (excluding 25 per cent single person reduction); Housing Benefit; Job Seekers Allowance (income-based); Pension Credit; Working Tax Credit (income less than £15,460); Disability Living Allowance; Child Tax Credit (income less £15,460); War Disablement Pension (plus constant attendance allowance or mobility supplement); industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit; and Attendance Allowance.
However, those not on benefits can still access cheaper prices for insulation through the SYEEAC. All householders living within the administrative boundaries of Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster and Sheffield Councils are eligible regardless of their circumstances.
