The latest homelessness statistics published today (16 January) reveal that the numbers of households in priority need accepted as homeless fell by 9% in June-September 2007 period over the same quarter in 2006/7, to 1,578.
The numbers of households in temporary accommodation fell by 6% over the same period to 2,955, and the figures for households in Bed and Breakfast accommodation fell by 46% over this period.
The Deputy Minister for Housing, Jocelyn Davies, welcomed the latest figures.
She said:
I am delighted that homelessness figures are continuing to fall. The Welsh Assembly Government is its focusing its resources on the prevention of homelessness, and this will continue to be our priority.
It is particularly pleasing to see the significant fall in the numbers of households in Bed and Breakfast accommodation, which should be used only as a last resort for homeless people.
Over the next 12 months we will be developing a 10-year plan to tackle homelessness, which will secure long term progress in tackling this social problem.
