Information Society Minister encourages Older People to maximise use of their mobile phones

Information Society Minister, Tom Kitt TD has instigated a roll out of mobile phone training for older people, to promote social inclusion.

Speaking after a recent eInclusion ministerial meeting in Lisbon, he indicated that one of his key objectives for 2008 would be to encourage older people to reap the benefits of the knowledge society.

“You don’t always need a computer to do that. I intend to broaden the current scope of focus to include mobiles phones” said Minister Kitt

“I have now instigated a new Seniors Outreach Programme which will commence in 2008.  It will involve talks being given to groups of older people on how computers and the internet can be relevant and useful to them – and now Mobile phones are to be encompassed in this new outreach initiative.”

“Research conducted by my Department in 2007 showed that many senior citizens owned mobile phones  - but the vast majority were only getting a fraction of the benefit from them that they could, especially at this time of year, which can be a lonely time for those living alone.  Many older people simply use them to make phone calls, and don’t take advantage of the other benefits. This programme could be the perfect opportunity to learn how to make modern technology work for people. I am determined to increase the number of older people involved in the knowledge society.”

While details of how the outreach programme will operate have yet to be finalised, any group with an interest in having a tutor address it on these issues, may indicate their interest by phoning 01 619 4432.
