Today (Monday 25 June) Salisbury District Council is launching a six-week recycling awareness campaign.

Recycling and the collection of waste are very much in the news and in people’s thoughts.

As a council it is clear we must find a way of getting people to recycle more, because:

• Space on landfill is running out.
• Rubbish buried in landfill is seriously harming the environment.
• We are not recycling enough. If we do not increase our recycling figures by 80% in the next three years we – the council and council tax payers – will be hit hard in the pocket with huge seven-figure fines.

We want every resident in south Wiltshire to know why it is so important to recycle, what it means to the environment and what it could mean for the future of other council services.

Over the next six weeks we will be highlighting a number of issues around recycling. During this time we will also be running an opinion poll on our website – and we will be launching a search for south Wiltshire’s best recycling family.
