Lancaster City Council today launches its new accessible website.

Completely redesigned, the new website www.lancaster.gov.uk has been developed to comply with the latest government guidelines on accessibility and usability.

Visitors to the site can now configure it to meet their individual needs with respect to text size, colour and background contrast. The site has also been designed to make it accessible to those who do not use a mouse, or who use assistive technologies such as text readers.

Usability has also been addressed. The many services provided by the council have been grouped into meaningful categories to assist in finding information. And there are now quick links to all our most popular pages and to the increasing number of ‘do it online’ services we offer – such as paying council bills or finding schools, recycling points or roadworks.

The new website represents a significant step in the council’s progress towards making all of its information and services electronically available. The existing site already attracts over 10,000 visitors each month, and with a more accessible and usable design, and more and more services becoming electronically enabled, this figure is set to grow significantly.

Commenting, Coun Alex Stone said: 'The council is working hard to make its information and services as accessible as possible to everyone in the district and the new website is one the results. I hope that existing and new web users will find the site quicker to load and simpler to use.'
