In view of the massive scale of destruction and need caused by the cyclone Nargis, and the acceptance by Burmese authorities to receive international assistance, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michel, has called for an urgent meeting of EU ministers in charge of humanitarian aid to be held in Brussels next Tuesday 13th of May.

UK Government to give £1 million for China earthquake relief

The UK Government will give up to £1m towards the relief effort for the earthquake in China, the International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander announced today.

The World Bank approved three credits worth a total of $30 million to Moldova today through the International Development Association (IDA). The credits are targeted at bolstering efforts of projects that are already working to help farmers be more competitive, to improve access to clean water and sanitation services and to support reforms to make government more efficient and effective.

Advocates for International Development (A4ID) hosted a bespoke training seminar, in partnership with law firm Clifford Chance and microfinance social business Grameen-Jameel Pan-Arab Microfinance Ltd (GJ). The seminar was held in Tunisia and provided guidance to representatives from Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) throughout the Middle East and North Africa on the negotiation of loan agreements. The programme facilitated the sharing of financial knowledge and expertise of leading lawyers from the City of London with Microfinance Institutions, who often as a result of lack of resources are not able to access the high quality legal advice that they require.
